I call you a pearl because you truly are…precious, beautiful and costly… Yes you… I know you are thinking of your past…your mistakes, your flaws, the abuses you’ve gone through, the paths you have walked, either willingly or forced by people or circumstances…and you justify your own disqualification.
As ladies we go through a lot irritations in life, and especially in the area of our sexuality and relationships; rape, sexual, emotional and even physical abuse, rejection and abandonment by a loved one, compromising in our sexuality to get love and later we realize we were just being used. These greatly affect our emotions, self esteem and identity. Many of us resign ourselves to these experiences and let them define us and dictate our future.
But do you know why a pearl is one of the most beautiful of Jewels? This is because it is born out of irritation. A tiny piece of sand seeps into an oyster shell and begins to rub against the soft tissue causing an irritation. In response to the irritation the oyster produces a hard substance, which is what is called a pearl. The more the irritation it goes through, the better the quality of the pearl. In the same way most of the world’s valuable things and outstanding people are born out of sacrifice, pain, irritation, fire and hardship.
Just like an ugly oyster shell is the most unlikely place to find such a lovely and costly gem so do we feel about ourselves. We often feel we are ugly, worthless, inadequate, weak, based on the experiences we’ve gone through, where as in truth we are very beautiful inside, valuable, and strong in the Lord, anointed for our purposes in life!
I’d like to share with you two of my favorite scriptures that give me a revelation of who I truly am.
Gen 1:26a-27: “…and God said, Let Us make man in our image, after our likeness… And God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him. He created them male and female.” God here is speaking to the other members of the Godhead, the Son and the Holy Spirit, telling them to make man in their image, that is form, reflection or representation, and His likeness, which is functionality in personality and characteristics. You can imagine the beauty, character and the personality of God… It is the same way He has wired you. It’s a fact!
Eph 2:10: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. What does “workmanship” mean? It means a great artistic work, an exceptional good piece of creative work, the best piece of work by a particular artist or crafts person, a piece of work presented that is worthy of a rank of a master craft. This is what God created us to be. But do you believe it?
People always treat us the way we treat ourselves, if you believe that you are all the negative things brought by your circumstances, then that’s how you will present yourself to people and they will disrespect you, trod all over you and not value you. But if you carry yourself with respect, value and dignity then people will treat you the same. It begins with transforming your mind with what God says about you and believing in His truth. No one will believe it for you, you have to do it yourself, it has to be a personal conviction.
We go through difficult experiences, and I can’t underestimate your pain. But give it back to God and He will turn your ashes to beauty, you pain to joy and peace and; a call to reach to others who have gone through the same. Our experiences can make us stronger and better people, making better choices in life.
Shalom beloved of the Lord
